The Nisei at War

The Nisei at War

The 442nd RCT standing in review

Readers of Facing the Mountain will be familiar with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry Battalion. But the story of Japanese American military service actually goes beyond these two units, including most particularly, in the Military Intelligence Service.

For a comprehensive overview of how and where the Nisei served, see this Densho Encyclopedia entry:

Another broad overview is available at the 100th Infantry Battalion’s website:

Japanese American Units

The Densho YouTube channel on Military Service presents a wide variety of first-hand accounts from Nisei veterans, including Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Daniel Inouye.

To listen to the oral histories of over 1,200 Nisei veterans, visit the Hanashi Oral History Program at the Go For Broke National Education Center’s website:
